Drama Way 2003 - 2005
Drama - a way to social inclusion ( Drama Way ) -project was partly funded by the European Union Socrates Joint actions program. The project started in 2002 and concluded in the end of February 2005.
The project was coordinated by the University of Turku , Centre for Extension Studies from Finland . The partners were MTÜ VAT Teater from Tallinn, Estonia, Theatre BAAL-17 from Serpa, Portugal and Forn de Teatre Pa`tothom from Barcelona, Spain.
Drama Way tackled the challenges in the countryside villages of Portugal , modern city of Barcelona in Spain , young people around Estonia , and towns and countryside of South- Western Finland .

The project was about
- working with young people,
- questions of social inclusion or marginalisation,
- interactive and participatory drama.
Mission
Drama Way explored the multiple ways drama and theatre can be used to help young people towards social inclusion. It experiments with various cultural activities on the edge of formal and informal education. Drama is not just art for arts sake or a school subject. It is active creation of alternative futures and identities by the young people themselves. In Drama Way skills and methods are developed in order to serve the needs of young people better.
Themes
The project tackled for example with the following themes:
- youth and cultural identity in isolated rural villages,
- prevention of drug abuse,
- interactive possibilities of forum theatre and TV,
- learning about sex,
- running away from home,
- being different,
- dialogue between parents and youngsters,
- local mythology,
- work with young prisoners,
- cultural integration of young immigrants,
- social inclusion of ethnic minority groups.
Methods
The project partners have applied various methods for their local needs:
- process drama (drama-in-education),
- forum theatre,
- Live Action Role Play (LARP),
- celebratory drama,
- cite-specific events,
- visual presentations,
- writing and photo workshops,
- Theatre-in-Education (TIE),
- clownery,
- circus.
To whom
The material produced in the project is useful to students and practitioners of
- youth, social, socio-cultural work,
- education in primary and secondary schools,
- health and therapy work,
- theatre and drama,
- administrators and sponsors.
Results
- A web site functioning as a material bank for pedagogical and participatory drama methods
- 4 national workshops held in partner countries, consisting of instructor education, presentations and observations of the local projects, method development and reflection and poster seminar,
- European conference for the final dissemination and to the method development and for the international networking,
- International expert exchange, work based learning and visits,
- Local, national and international networks and cooperation partnerships.
